Attractively styled; punchy diesel engine

Unsophisticated ride on early cars; awkward gearchange
The Kia of recent times ha been a company that's launched a string of impressive products. Good value - but essentially lacklustre - models have been replaced with cars that look good, feel good and still tick all the boxes when it comes to value, specification and running costs. The Rio sticks to that formula. It's all-new (only the name is carried over from the old car), has stylish looks, a good diesel engine and a great standard equipment list. It competes with Clio and Fiesta at the larger end of the small car market.
