BMW 1993 3-Series Convertible

  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Hit by un-BMW-like depreciation. Book value now only £8k. Great if you're buying now, but buying a cheaper example is false economy.

    Costs

    1 out of 5 1.0

Cost me a small fortune to run - servicing and repair costs exceeded £2500 in 1 year! ECUs for virtually everything ensure that a BMW dealer visit is needed for even simple problems. 26mpg. Insurance group 15.

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Lovely to drive with hood up or down. Smooth engine. Nice steering and gearbox. Handling very good for a RWD car.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Convertible is heavier than coupe and it shows in the performance. Nothing happens below 3500rpm. 328i a better bet.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Mechanicals rock-solid, but reliability of auxilliary equipment not what I expected from BMW.

    Image

    5 out of 5 5.0

Excellent. A real looker. Why else would I have put up with those running costs?

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

With the hood up, you forget it's a convertible. Even with the roof down on the motorway, there's little bufferting. Functional dash ergonomically sound. Lumbar support on front seats not great.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Total-closure alarm system fitted to this car. Deadlocks. Built in immobiliser, but it doesn't auto-arm.

    Service

    4 out of 5 4.0

BMW dealers expensive, but honest and professional.

Heater fan (£150). Ok, so this car obviously hadn't been looked after, but I expected better from a BMW.
