Hyundai i40 Tourer review

Want to know everything there is to know about this car?

In their own words

It's a good looking car with great panoramic roof. Well placed for motorway driving but not hilly and narrow roads. Large wheels and low profile tyres aren't meant for our poor road and potholed surfaces.
Had initial problems with the rear parking sensors with the car less than a year old. Poor headlight performance on dark and wet roads made for unnerving and uncomfortable driving, even though I had brighter bulbs fitted.

How reliable do you find the car?

Several rear parking sensors fixed under warranty. Another failure out of warranty.
Steering column replacement out of warranty cost £3450.
Replaced radiator and air con condenser out of warranty cost £500
Replaced front discs at 40000 miles now and advisable at 71000 miles on MOT.
Driving lights at night are very poor with road illumination from the start, had all bulbs replaced with aftermarket brighter bulbs with very little increase in road illumination.

Does the car do everything you expected it to do?

On the plus side I found the car excellent on motorway driving with comfort and space, but given where I live the terrain is quite hilly with narrow roads and uneven road surfaces. The 18" wheels with low profile tyres make for an uncomfortable and noisy ride. Although a diesel, the torque at low revs in a low gear can be trying on steep hill starts.
Had to have the windscreen replaced one winter ago when a 300mm crack appeared on a very cold night.
Cannot update the Satnav as advised by my Hyundai dealership as it could render the system unusable during the up-dating, and would have to be replaced with a new unit costing me over £1200. I'm now riding around with Satnav with out of date maps
Basically a good car but not as good as my previous Focus Estate to drive, and not as economical.
