Don't buy parts from Mazda dealers - pricy! Returns about 38mpg average.

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Actually the 1.8 litre model. Quite a lot of road noise, ride slightly harsh, handles quite well, very smooth gearchange, steering well-weighted and direct

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Reasonably quick with 1.8 engine, but best performance above 4000rpm. Some resonances at 2-2500rpm, but may be due to aftermarket exhaust system. Gearing gives 3250rpm at 70mph.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Very reliable - in 2.5 years and mileage from 62,500 to 85,600 miles, only routine servicing. Never let me down.

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Stylish in 5-door hatchback body style. Needs bigger wheels (16 or 17"") and lower ride height to looks it's best.

    Comfort

    2 out of 5 2.0

Seats supportive, but designed for shorter people (I'm 6ft6). Slightly hard ride on factory 15"" wheels with 195/55R15 tyres.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

Basic by today's standards - no immobiliser or alarm.

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

Service car myself. Avoid dealers due to expense.
