Mazda 626 Hatchback (1992-)
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

    Great value used.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Pretty good. Shares a lot of similar parts to the Ford Probe (I know...), so find a mechanic that knows this. Hardly any tyre wear!

  • On the road

    Driving

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not bad for a family sized hatch, the steering can be a little vague, and I never got the confidence to throw it round corners. It probably would have been OK though.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

From 30mph upwards in second gear it picks up nicely - change at 6000 rpm though. A bit more power would been nice, but the 1.8 is reasonably frugal.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Utterly reliable. It passes the level crossing ""Shall I switch the engine off while I wait?"" test with flying colours.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

I've seen far worse family hatchbacks, and from some angles it can look slightly sporty.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Not bad at all, although some more lower back support would be nice.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

You could probably leave it unlocked with the keys in. Not a target.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

All service done by non Mazda mechanic. Straightforward.

    Engine

Can occasionally smoke on start-up on cold mornings. Watch the valve seals, and check the plugs for oil.
