Peugeot 205 Cabriolet 1986
  • Economy

    Value

Seriously under-appreciated car. Cheap as chips at the moment, but there are some real dogs around. Fantastic fun for the money.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

It's a 205, so parts are plentiful and cheap, except unique cabriolet parts (doors, seals, hood etc), which are getting scarce new and are horrendously expensive from Peugeot. Some turning up in breakers yards, now, but parts go quickly. Expect 30 mpg.

Closest thing to karting on the road! Great fun and impossible to drive without a hugh maniacal grin across your face!

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

1.6i is very quick and nimble. Best handling drop-top I've ever driven (especially with 40mm lower suspension). Roadholding defies belief with 195 section tyres. 1.9i is insane!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

I have NEVER had a serious problem with this car in 4 years of ownership.

Not as 'classy' as a Golf, but far more fun. Drop the top and pose around in the sun all day!

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

It's a mid-80's Peugeot, so expect tinny build with lots of squeaks and rattles, but that's part of the character. Firm suspension can be harsh over rough roads. Wind noise from hood can be tiring at motorway speeds. Seats offer outstanding comfort.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Unless you fit an alarm/immobiliser, the first toerag with a coat-hanger will be away with it. Most of them in legitimate ownership will have one by now. Make sure the VIN matches on the V5, frame and engine bay plate. Alloys need locking nuts.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Dealer servicing reasonable. DIY servicing is as easy as counting to 3. Don't expect a discount on parts at the dealer, or much help if you need information, but there's loads of specialists who will undercut Peugeot and a wealth of info on the Internet.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Never had any problems, except a slighly lumpy idle when cold.

    Other

Envy/greed - it's been keyed and the hood has been slashed (new one c.£200 from Autohoods). I also had all four wheels with brand new tyres replaced with housebricks 3 weeks after they were refurbished. See comment under 'Security' above.
