Renault 19 Hatchback 1989-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

If serviced regularly, diesel engine is extremely economical for its age. Build quality is comparable to Volkswagen. Doors 'thud' when closed and the whole car feels solid and safe.

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

Mechanical parts are not too expensive through specialist dealers, though trim parts can be expensive and harder to obtain.

  • On the road

    Driving

Excellent roadholding and super-smooth, if slightly soft, ride. Soft suspension noticeable with adult passengers and luggage in rear, especially on corners.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Noticeable turbo lag, but above 1800 rpm the engine changes from a chugging agricultural diesel into an industrial powerstation. Exhilirating acceleration at motorway speeds, accompanied by a satisfying whistle from the turbo. Long gear ratios.

    Reliability

This car never let me down. Shortly after I bought my Renault 19, the battery gave up. Upon replacement hte garage told me that the battery had been the original, i.e. the battery it had left the production line with 12 yrs earlier.

The subtle body styling- skirts and spoiler make this car stand out from the rest. The overall appearance is sporty but sensible. Low suspension gives it a 'tough' profile.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Smooth ride, low road noise and luxurious velour bucket seats make the miles fly by. Front seat passengers tend to fall asleep. Remote radio/cassette controls on steering column.

Can't comment on this as nobody ever tried to steal my Renault.
