With GRP body panels and no rust, a reliable, frugal engine and comfort for 6 to the south of France and back it's a good value motor.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Having not paid for the FRSH it had when I got it, and doing my own servicing, it's not expensive. The engine is very awkward to work on, the worst I've come across. Timing belt replacement means radiator, alternator and half the the engine out.

    Driving

    3 out of 5 3.0

Comfortable ride, reasonable handling, it's not meant to be hurled round corners but when pushed, slides the front in a predictable way. Good brakes stop safely. Steering feedback van-like but it is van-like so...

    Performance

    2 out of 5 2.0

I don't want to speed with 4 kids in the back and it pulls away well. We did 100mph all the way back from S France fully loaded without a hiccup.

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

2.1 TD engine is great. Screw and locknut valve adjustment is a doddle. 27k miles in 6 months with only a new alternator and rear hubs. Loves oil changes, will run and run. Cabin electrics are a tad weak is all.

Couldn't give a toss for image, but still better looking than a Sedona.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

The driving position is comfortable, the dash and radio controls are a reach, but it is not a back ache machine. I can drive this all day and feel only slightly stiff. The arm rests are the first I've come across at natural elbow height.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

Central locking works remotely without problems otherwise very average, but not a likely target for thieves. With 7 seats, there's nowhere to hide shopping etc.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Renault (Matra) never designed this machine to be maintained. Parts expensive and hard work to fit.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Nightmare to work on, access limited - try to lock the crankshaft with the facility provided ha ha.

    Other

Treat this old machine with care and it will reward you with reliable service - frequent oil changes (4k mile intervals).
