Rover 400 Saloon 1996-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Cheap as chips to buy considering Rover's demise! Best value car I've ever had.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Do my own service and repairs so not expensive. Insurance too high for a family car.

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Comfortable, if a little body roll at speed around bends.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Quite nippy off the lights and no problem up long inclines. Fuel consumption as you'd expect from a 2 litre, but no worse than my old Honda/ Rover 1.5 litre auto (In fact it's better). About 325 miles per tank.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    3 out of 5 3.0

Excellent so far, routine maintenance/ full service. A power steering pipe and clock replaced, but the car is on 131000 miles at the moment, so no surprises there.

I'm in denial of the Grandad image, to me it's quite a posh car.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Comfortable seats in the front, a little small at the back. A little noisier in the cab than you would expect from a car of this class. Aircon is a must and adds much to the driving experience.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Factory fitted and, thankfully, untested. Should be fine.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Parts may well become difficult to get hold of in the future.
