Toyota MR2 1990-

Want to know everything there is to know about this car?

  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

    5*s if you're after an Imprezza-killer for £3.5k+

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Carburettor = £80, synthetic oil only, core radiator repair £150+, etc. Parts are not cheap (and I bought at cost price).

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very good. A little arse-happy in the wet, but 17x235s on the rear help. Firm ride counts against, but point-and-go precise steering.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Whip out the CAT on the older models and fit a performance filter and you're pushing 230-250bhp. 0-60 in approx 5 secs.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Never any reliability problems. If poss, cover the radiator with an aftermarket guard, as it is expensive to repair.

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Difficult... I give it 4, as I think it's a beautiful, timeless design. But, there are some people who scoff at them. As Max Power used to say 'hairdressers' can't cut the 200+bhp. Enough said.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

    Did 300 miles in a day. Never again. (I'm 6' 2").

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Nothing as standard. Bought a very visible Thatcham 3 steering lock and aftermarket alarm/immobiliser (total approx. £300) Thieves love them and who can blame them?

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Toyota don't (quite rightly) want to know. Helpful to know a friendly mechanic for servicing etc.

  • Problems and Ownership

Turbo lag was sorted by running Optimax fuel.
