Brilliant Build quality. Very reliable and trouble free.
If you do buy one check Service Record carefully as Transfer Box, Gearbox and Rear Diff require Oil change every 20K, and most important correct type of Oil. If not, this can lead to Oil Seal issues. In my case, with current Rav4 2.2 D4D, had a small gearbox leak to Transfer Box... now repaired.
Strong engine, very reliable. Solid and great for towing with strong chassis. On older models, check carefully for rust around back axle and rear underside. Easily treated though if not too serious.
Overall, a great car and brilliant SUV.
