In their own words

It is a very good car, but there are so many niggles that I never felt 'at home' in it, and mean I miss my old cars. Dislikes: The roof is VERY low. Not a problem for me, but 6'2"+ passengers in the front seats always felt a bit squeezed. The front cupholders. Really should be named 'canholders' as they can store two cans of coke side by side, but not two coffee cups (at least one is always tilted). Plus, they have a stupid plastic piece in the middle, which makes it awkward to put drinks in them. The silver centre console trim is a different colour silver than the horizontal silver trim (ok, maybe this one is a bit OCD). The cruise control - can do +5 mph, -5mph and +1 mph, but not -1mph, so if travelling at 70 and needing to 'trim' the speeed to 69, you have to slow down and reset, or -5 +1 +1 +1 +1. Door storage is too shallow - my ice scraper keeps falling out when I open the door. 3-stage heated seat button has to be pressed 3 times to get a 'low' heat on. Don't see the point of the highest setting, when temps in the UK rarely get below zero. Would prefer if it was 3 presses to get high heat. Satnav touchscreen is pointless - there are more features accessible through the controls than the via touchscreen itself (eg no pinch to zoom on maps). Bluetooth audio via speakers also means the iphone Waze satnav is better than the built in one. Can get 3 kids in the back, but the transmission tunnel is massive, so no chance for a teen or adult in the middle. Very long - easy enough to park, but more difficult to find parallel parking spaces than for some SUVs. Windows very narrow - so awkward when using drive-thrus. Auto start-stop Likes: Very good mpg. Low CO2 so cheap tax. Comfy seats. Bluetooth phone integration works very well with iphone and Android, with voice commands coming from Waze muting the stereo and playing via the speakers (only on iphone). Overall, if it wasn't for the very silly issues above (and the wiring loom fault), this would be a car I would recommend without hesitation, however the fact of the matter is those problems exist and if VW can't get the 'little details' right, then it makes you wonder how badly wrong they got the big details. It's also the day to day nature of these 'dislikes' that I never had with my previous BMW 5 series or Honda Accord.

How reliable do you find the car?

The car has been reliable, apart from the boot wiring loom. A common problem, which will recur and a very expensive fix - what idiot at VW decided to put electrical wires in a moving part? They should have just put a simple metal contact on the boot sill - after all, you'll never need the rear lights on when the boot is open.

Does the car do everything you expected it to do?

Very good mpg - normally 53-58. Managed to once get 64mpg on a motorway run.
