Not new, bought used, but happy with cost. Prices are always higher for a Golf.

    Costs

    2 out of 5 2.0

Hmmm... pricey. Motor factor parts for Golfs can be dear... I've found some parts are better purchased from local VW dealer.

Slower and heavier body than my 1600cc Mk2, but it does the job. PAS is a plus point..

    Performance

It's not F1 material. Perfectly easy to cruise at 70+ on m/way. More thirsty round town.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    2 out of 5 2.0

My Mk3 has a catalogue of problems. Broken interior trim, glove box handle snapped, poor starting, engine sensors failing. Complete opposite to my Mk2 which seemed bomb-proof.

It's a Golf! Great shape. Truly iconic. I'd rather sit in a Golf than in an Astra/Almera/Escort etc etc.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Roomy for a hatchback. The basic CL trim is a bit gloomy. Seats are dark cloth with minimal pattern, but they seem reasonably hardwearing. Steering wheel changed for a four spoke from GL which is more comfy than the basic 2 spoke.

  • Security and Service

    Security

Very solid body... but weak locks. Having said that, no one's nicked it yet.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

I have never had the car serviced by VW, but I am very please with the efficiency of the parts department.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Runs smoothly, but poor starting. New coil-pack and several sensors fitted, but still not cured.
