In their own words

Bought new, still own it 9 years later. GT TSI 160 twincharger. Optional 18" Vancouver alloys and Reflex Silver metallic paint. Perfect over 9 years - water pump fail and rear shock absorber fail were only issues. Engine's faultless, amazing speed-related power steering, superb comfort and roadholding. Alcantara seats look as good as new. Currently doing about 35mpg in urban stop/start traffic, so not bad considering the performance it offers when needed - or wanted! Very easy to do over 100mph, so keep your eyes on the speedo (relaxed & quiet at that speed). Wheels and bodywork show little signs of wear - quality interior is mark-free. Tyres last about 15,000 miles (Dunlop), but they're soft rubber (suppresses noise and vibration, great roadholding). Dealer's 'service packs' bought since new - so servicing has cost the equivalent of about £175/200 a year over the 9 years (with free MOT's and 10% off parts [wipers, etc]). If you're looking for a Golf that will excite you, be economical, and be comfortable, then you can't go wrong with the GT TSI 160. Road tax is £145 a year, insurance is fairly cheap. Recommend 18" Vancouver alloys for looks, and Dunlop tyres for low roadnoise and roadholding. Leather option isn't the best with the sports seats - the alcantara keeps you in place much better than leather. I love the car, and I'll keep it until it starts playing up or I win the lottery!
