Other Volkswagen Polo (1994 - 2000) models:

  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

Solid, dependble, reassured, understated, consciencious, reliable, non-flashy and sensible.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

State that "it's a great little car" which to be fair it is.

Would you buy this car again and why?

If I was in a similar situation where I had 'temporary' cash flow problems and I needed something that wouldn't let me down then absolutely.

What are you likely to buy next?

VW Passat or Bora, or maybe an Audi A4. Or the way the automotive industry is heading - maybe a decent push bike!

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Independent

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £1,200

When did you buy the car?

    February 2006

Did you get a good deal and why?

Yes, low mileage (59000) for a 10 year old car at a decent price.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Needed a reliable car for relatively short commutes through city traffic, that had decent build quality. Also, I wanted some economy after driving a VW Corrado previously...

    What was the dealer like?

  • Driving it

    4 out of 5 4.0

    What's it like to drive?

I've driven a few of its rivals (Micra, Clio, Ka, Saxo) and the Polo feels the most solid and hence has the smoothest ride. However, performance is uninspiring at best and don't even ask it to corner aggressively - but to be honest if your contemplating buying this car then you'll be a decent driver and not a wannabe 'Too Fast & Furious' driver so extreme performance and handling won't be major issues.

    What's it like to park?

Fits into spaces that other cars simply can't! Effortless - even without power steering.

  • Living with it

    4 out of 5 4.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Minor: clutch cable snapped when I 1st got it, but it cot me £19 to replace and lots of friends with younger cars have had the clutch cable go, so I think this is reasonable.

What's most practical about your car?

Decent economy for a heavy chasis (I get about 450 miles to a tank when driving like Grandpa). Solid image and reality.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The lack of gadgets options and accessorys make it very undesirable and hence 'un-stealable'.
