Amrit Kaur has come fresh out of the Automotive Journalism master’s course at Coventry University. Her love of cars started when she was a wee girl, watching old-old Top Gear with her dad, reading magazines together and later helping him in the garage with his Saab 900 Turbo.Read more
At university she first studied Automotive Engineering, moved to Mechanical Engineering, and bowled straight into maths teacher training. After putting in a good innings in a ‘proper job’, seeing the big wide world and spending a year in Taipei, she decided to return to do what she always wanted, and become a motoring journalist.
She’s likely to be seen scrolling frivolously on Autotrader and eBay looking at cheap cars that she certainly doesn’t need but could talk herself into owning. On her current watch list is an old Lexus LS luxury barge, a vintage BMW 5 Series and a Saab 9-5 Aero estate. Her first car was a Honda Civic Type R, which was mercilessly written off by a hit-and-run driver. She keeps a picture of it in her purse, next to pictures of her moustachioed cat.
When she’s not wrapped up in cars, she’s probably listening to music on her vintage hi-fi, watching reruns of ‘90s Simpsons or is off to a gig or music festival. She loves to travel and thanks Bourdain for it. She’s also a keen photographer and is usually locked up in justifying why she needs to spend more on camera equipment.
Otherwise, she’s on a personal mission to get more women and non ‘car-guys’ involved in the car world. Wishing to arm them with the knowledge you need before buying, introducing them to cool and interesting cars, and walk with confidence into a garage without the fear of being ripped off.
Amrit’s top tips for Parkers readers are:
- If you’re looking to buy a used car from an independent dealer or private seller and you’re not confident in inspecting a car, definitely get a pre-purchase inspection. It could save you hundreds, if not thousands, in the long run.
- Seriously think about owning an older car than leasing something new. Though it’s tempting to get the latest, could you save up and buy used to get a better car for the money?
- Shop around for car insurance using multiple comparison sites. Often the same insurers will offer different prices on different platforms, for the exact same policy. Also try to get your policy sorted in advance as it’ll be cheaper than starting your policy on the same day.
