BMW 5-Series GT running costs and reliability

Fuel economy
Don’s expect BMW 5 Series GT running costs to be cheap but it is decent value when compared to similarly sporty yet practical cars such as the Porsche Panamera, especially as standard equipment levels are generous – something which is unusual on premium German cars. The 530d is the best for affordable running costs and will return a useful 44mpg. New buyers can also choose from two service packages aimed at keeping maintenance costs down.
Called BMW Service Inclusive, owners pay a one off fee which covers all general servicing for five years or 60,000 miles. Service Inclusive Plus adds to this by also including brake pads, brake discs and windscreen wipers, but the price rises accordingly.
Efficient Dynamics is the label BMW gives to the various systems it uses to improve efficiency and lower emissions. BMW 5 Series GT emissions have been lowered because it uses certain parts such as brake energy regeneration (which recharges the battery when braking) and active aerodynamics which closes flaps behind the grille to improve windflow. That said, it’s still a heavy car at two tonnes, so the 530d is fairly impressive with economy of 44mpg and emissions of 173g/km of CO2.
Traditionally a BMW strong point, the firm has a great reputation for solid engineering and robust build quality. BMW 5 Series GT reliability is pretty sound because all engines in the GT have been well proven across the BMW range and this model has all the hallmarks of a high quality premium vehicle.
