BYD Seal 6 Saloon verdict

What we like
The BYD Seal 6 DM-i represents incredible value for money. The cheapest model is around £10,000 less expensive than the entry-level BMW 330e. That’s worth paying attention to, even if you do sacrifice some driving dynamics and ride quality for the privilege. Plus, BYD’s hybrid system seems to meter out its electricity more efficiently than most other PHEVs and it offers far more space inside for passengers.
What we don’t like
It rides a little too harshly on anything other than a perfectly surfaced motorway – and while that tight body control means it corners flat, its numb steering never encourages you to throw it around. BYD’s driver monitoring technology also needs a lot more calibration. It’s far too keen to scold you for trivial ‘lapses’ in your concentration.
