It isn’t immediately obvious to most people by adding air con cleaners to your car interior cleaning job list – but they are very useful for keeping your vehicle hygienic. Any system that deals with cooling or heating in a confined space is bound to create moisture, and where there is moisture, there is always the risk of horrible spores and bacteria forming in the system, which can, in turn, cause unpleasant smells and even distribute unhealthy particles into the car.

From lingering pet smells to the remnants of last week’s takeaway, our cars can keep a hold of any number of not-so-pleasant smells that can hang around, even after vacuuming, making the daily commute more unpleasant.

Sometimes, we have to bite the bullet and make the decision to give the interior a run-through with a carpet cleaner to revive it, but there is an easier path.

In less than half an hour (at most), air conditioning cleaners can neutralize and eliminate the most stubborn odours, transforming the interior of your car from an unemptied dustbin back into that comfortable place you know and love.

But the benefits don’t end there. Not only do these cleaners obliterate existing odours, but they also have the power to fill your car with a variety of scents – even giving you that ‘new car’ smell. From fresh citrus bursts to the comfort of clean linen, there are many choices.

Most of these are easy to use as you just switch the air con to full power, select the recycled air option, activate the spray and close the doors for 10-15 minutes. Then, all you have to do is allow the car to air for another 10-15 minutes, and that’s the job done. Join us as we explore the transformative capabilities of air conditioning cleaners and discover how they can breathe new life into your driving experience.

How we tested

Quite simply, each air con cleaner was tested in a different vehicle to ensure a fair test of the product’s capability of cleanliness. Each vehicle was operated in the exact conditions that the instructions of each bottle specify, and we used a stopwatch app to know exactly when to switch to what stage.

All the cars had their engines running for up to 10-minutes beforehand before we engaged the air con cleaners and began testing. We aired out each vehicle after testing for around 10-minutes, depending on the instructions and then assessed the results based on scent and freshness. The longevity of each air con cleaner was then assessed over a long-term period, to find out how long the scent and fresh feeling lasted.

What to consider when buying air con freshener

Primarily, an air freshener is designed to provide freshness to your car’s cabin. So, whether it’s good enough at doing that is the key objective. Next up is ease of use, where we considered how time-consuming and/or complex the instructions were on each product. Plus most, if not, all of these air fresheners tested are single-use types which are designed to work by themselves while the engine and A/C is on.

When considering value for money, as most of the products are single-use the price shouldn’t be too high, as you only get one chance to get it right. However, if it excels at interior freshness, then we will score it accordingly. All of the above will eventually be tied into our overall score.

The best air con cleaner
Topping the rankings in our refreshing (joke intended) air con cleaning test is Autoglym's Air-Con Sanitiser. We gave it a fair test by placing it in a daily-driven Vauxhall Corsa - a prime candidate as we suspect normal, everyday cars like this are going to be subject to the need of their air con systems cleaning.

So, how did it get on? The citrus/lemon scent was subtle, yet still really noticeable after the bottle had run out of steam. It took a touch longer to fully release than the Bilt Hamber Air-Con Bomb (reviewed below), yet I feel it not only left a more pleasant scent, but also a fresher cabin atmosphere.

Obviously, a single-use air con bomb is almost too easy to use in principle. But I was fortunate for a set of easy instructions, which I followed exactly to the word. The process is slightly lengthier than others, so you'll just have to allocate yourself a bit more time; around 15-20 minutes or so to fully refresh a car's cabin.

Review by Aaron Hussain

Pros

  • A brilliantly easy set of instructions with a straighforward process
  • Scent is a pleasent lemon/citrus type which makes the cabin nice to be in
  • Can tackle bacteria and even viruses as well as scents, which is useful if you're siper hygienic

Cons

  • The process takes a tad longer than some others, but that's not necesserily an issue

The immediate impression I got from Bilt Hamber's Citrus Air-Con Bomb was that is didn't really smell like citrus as per the Autoglym. It almost reminds me of a cocktail bar and something you might order with a bit of mist flowing off the top. It's a strong scent, and the Mazda MX5 we tested it on needed to be aired out for quite a while.

The process was refreshingly quick. Two minutes of air con ventilation prep, five minutes of spray, followed by another six for ventilation, and this is a great air freshener to use if you're in a slight hurry - i.e. if you have a date and you want your car smelling fresh.

I was quite apprehensive of whether these air con cleaners would work with a convertible. I'm pleased to report that they do - just so long as the top is in good condition and air-tight.

As for the instructions? They were the easiest of the lot to read and follow - and the fact this was complimented with a quick process, and it would easily my pick of the bunch - I just wish the scent was a little less strong.

Pros

  • Incredibly quick process that takes as little as under 15-minutes
  • Good value for money for 175ml of product - especially for a small cabin cabin
  • Instructions were reassuringly easy to follow, which made the process a breeze

The best air con cleaner for scent
Scent is a matter of preference at the end of the day, and for me, Turtle Wax's Odour-X Cherry Freshener was by far my favourite. There is a strong whiff of cherry as soon as you depress the trigger, and it was so strong, that you could even smell it from outside the car whilst standing. In theory, you shouldn't be able to, so I suspect there was a slight leak somewhere between the seals.

Nevertheless, it takes an instructed 15-minutes to fully cleanse through the system - and that's without prep. However, you get rewarded by a really charming scent and sense of cleanliness once you return to the vehicle to air it out.

The instructions were also crystal clear and I had no issues following them. What I did notice towards the end however, was the bottle beginning to spit the last few bits of content. I'm going to put that down to me not shaking the bottle well enough before the main stage - which you should do a bit like an aerosol spray paint can.

When testing the brand's other scent - the Savage Ice - I didn't have this issue after I shook it for a couple of minutes longer before starting.

Review by Aaron Hussain

Pros

  • A really pleasant cherry scent that I felt made the cabin more welcoming
  • Easy to use with instructions that are even easier to follow
  • Great value for money at £12 for a twin pack, which undercuts rivals

Supposedly, a dash of this stuff will make a car smell brand new - provided you detail the interior, of course. You can get a few different scents with the Meguiar's Whole Car Air Re-Fresher, but I was curious to find out about the 'New Car' one - largely because I spent too many of my younger years window-shopping in car dealerships and picked up the different smells that seem to come with each manufacturer.

The first thing that caught my attention is that you need to be patient with this one, 15-minutes of operation followed by 10-minutes of airing out time is a fair bit on anyone's plate. And that's before running the engine for a bit in recirculation mode before you activate the freshener.

Meguiar's Air Con Refresher testing in Volvo

Nevertheless, did it smell clean and did the trusty seven-year-old Volvo have a new car scent? The simple answer is yes, while it smelled refreshingly clean, the new car smell claim is a bit far-fetched. It reminded me of a strong hair shampoo or body wash - one of those with a cool breeze title attached to it. Imagine that cold, minty feeling, but applied to a car interior - that's what this was to me.

The only issue I really have is that the instructions aren't immediately obvious. In fact, you have to peel the side label off in order to reveal a small leaflet attached to the side of the bottle. This took me ages to figure out, and prior to testing, I had to resort to online instructions before heading outside to check it out. Not good enough in my books.

Pros

  • Four choices of scents of this freshener to suit different tastes
  • Easy to use with quite long-lasting results (Meguiar's claim 'weeks' worth of freshness)
  • Good value for money at around £15, depending on the flavour

Cons

  • The volume isn't as large as others at 59ml

FAQs

Volvo V60 being aired out after air con cleaner used
Volvo V60 being aired out after air con cleaner used

Does car air con need cleaning?

The simple answer is yes. Car air con ventilation systems can build up with little bits of dirt and mould overtime, so it’s useful to clean them every now and then on top of your spruce-up with a handheld vacuum cleaner. Doing so can prevent harmful air from being circulated around the vehicle, but you must remember to use air con cleaners correctly and follow the instructions.

When should you clean your car air con?

You’ll get a lot of different answers, depending on how many miles your car has. But it’s good practice to clean out the system on an annual basis or every 20,000-miles, depending on what comes first.

How do air con cleaners work to eliminate odours?

Air conditioning cleaners typically contain powerful enzymes and deodorisers that effectively break down and neutralise odour-causing molecules, similar to some of the spray odour eliminators that are available. Whether sprayed into the air intake vents of your car’s air conditioning system or activated in your car interior, these cleaners circulate throughout the interior, targeting and eliminating odours at their source. This process helps to refresh the air within your car and leave behind a clean, pleasant scent.

Are air con cleaners safe to use in my car?

Yes, most air conditioning cleaners are formulated to be safe for use in vehicles. However, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and avoid spraying the cleaner directly onto surfaces such as upholstery or dashboard components. Additionally, it’s a good idea to test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility with your car’s materials.

How long does it take for air con cleaners to work?

One of the key advantages of air conditioning cleaners is their fast-acting nature. In many cases, you can notice a significant improvement in the freshness of your car’s interior in less than half an hour after application.

Can air con cleaners completely eliminate stubborn odours like cigarette smoke or pet smells?

While air conditioning cleaners are highly effective at neutralising a wide range of odours, stubborn smells like cigarette smoke or pet odours may need multiple applications to get rid of the smells completely.

What scents are available in air conditioning cleaners?

Air conditioning cleaners come in a variety of scents, ranging from classic favourites like fresh linen and lavender to more exotic options such as tropical fruit or ocean breeze. Whether you prefer a subtle, understated aroma or a bold, invigorating fragrance, there’s sure to be something that suits you.
