Where do compact pressure washers fit in? If you’re in the market for a pressure washer, you might be questioning whether you need a full-size high-power machine or if perhaps a compact one might suit your needs.

The worry is that a compact machine might not have sufficient power, strength or flow rate to perform as well as their full-size big brothers, but a look at the specifications of some of the compact washers around just now shows that they can be surprisingly powerful despite their diminutive appearance.

So why go for a compact pressure washer? Well, they are far more portable, even if cordless pressure washers take the portability crown, making them ideal for jobs that require you to move around a lot. They are easier to store when not in use, and the power output is generally more than adequate for most domestic chores.

One of the biggest advantages, especially in the current climate, is much like most budget pressure washers, that compact machines generally consume less power than full-size ones. In fact, a power washer will often consume less water in comparison to an ordinary garden hose doing the same job.

The Bosch delivers a reasonably powerful 120 bar for such a compact machine. It comes with a home and car accessory kit which includes a lance which has a fixed fan-jet nozzle, a rotary nozzle, a detergent foam nozzle, a brush and even a patio cleaner.

Cons

  • You can't vary the intensity of the spray nozzle

Kärcher offers some of the best value-for-money pressure washers on the market, and it's no exception with the Horizontal version of the entry-level K2. With all things considered, it's a perfect pressure washer for beginners.

It may only have a three-metre hose, but it can spray up to 360 litres per hour with 110 Bar of pressure. That's exceptional performance for its size and price point. Being an entry level K2, the build quality will not be as on-par as higher-end K5s and K7s, but you're saving stacks of cash by going for a K2.

It also comes with a five-year warranty (maximum), which gives you reassurance that Nilfisk build its pressure washers to a very high standard

The Karcher is one of the more powerful washers on our list, with a 1800w motor which generates a maximum pressure of 130 bar. It weighs 4.6kg which is a noticeable weight if you have to move it around a lot, but it does come with retractable wheels and a 6-metre hose.

The Vario Power spray lance can be adjusted to suit hard or more delicate surfaces as required, and there’s an integrated detergent inlet to help shift those tough stains.

The first thing you will probably notice is that the Makita is tiny, making it perfect for inclusion in a list of compact pressure washers.

The adjustable nozzle and detergent bottle give you greater control of your cleaning, and although it's slightly less powerful than the others on this list, with an output of 100 bar, it's still pretty impressive for its unimposing stature. If there were a minor complaint, it would be that it can be quite noisy when operating.

Pros

  • Really small, so easy to store
  • Surprising performance
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • Quite noisy when operating
Maximum pressure (bar) 100
Maximum water flow (l/h) N/A

The PW125 is the smallest, cheapest and least powerful in the Husqvarna range, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's well constructed and can cope with most domestic cleaning jobs.

As it's slightly less powerful at 125 bar, the spray area is a bit smaller, so tasks may take a little longer, but it does possess a 7m long hose which gives more flexibility whilst working and a handy hose reel for storage when you're finished. This is the tallest washer on our list, but it's still light and easy to move around.

Pros

  • Better than expected performance
  • Easy and convenient storage of hose and accessories
  • Easy to carry around

Cons

  • Less powerful, so some tasks can take a bit longer
  • Build quality not quite as on par as others

Some things to consider when buying a compact pressure washer:

Pressure and flow rate: Look for a pressure washer that provides sufficient pressure and flow rate for your cleaning tasks. Higher pressure and flow rate typically result in more effective cleaning. Generally speaking, pressure washers under £100 will provide less power.

Portability and size: Consider the weight and size, especially if you need to move it frequently or have limited storage space. Look for compact and lightweight models that are easy to manoeuvre and store.

Hose length: Check the length of the hose. A longer hose allows for greater reach and flexibility, especially when cleaning larger areas or hard-to-reach spots. If the hose length really is too short, you might want to consider getting an outdoor, waterproof extension cable.

Nozzle attachments: Different nozzle attachments and other accessories for pressure washers provide various spray patterns, such as a narrow jet for stubborn stains or a wide fan for broader coverage.

Build quality and durability: While a budget-friendly pressure washer may not have the same level of durability as more expensive models, look for one that is built with quality materials and has positive customer reviews regarding its durability and longevity.

Compact pressure washer frequently asked questions:

Why choose a compact pressure washer?

If space or storage is an issue for you, a compact pressure washer will provide the cleaning power you need, and it won’t take up too much room when it’s not in use. These pressure washers will skip over massively long hose reels, plethora of attachments, and extra styling torches, all in the name of saving space. These small pressure washers will also be lighter than traditional units, which is good news for anyone with a bad back.

Are compact pressure washers less powerful than regular examples?

Yes and no. It’s unlikely you will get an industrial-strength power washer in a compact design, but most compact power washers will provide a more than adequate output for the majority of domestic purposes, car cleaning included. Anything more than 120 bar will begin to wander into potential paint damage territory, and these pressure washers will rate in underneath this figure.
