When it comes to the best battery chargers, jump starters and other electrical components to help keep your car running, there are only a handful of manufacturers who can be trusted for quality every time. Up there in the atmosphere of excellence, one name stands out: NOCO.

Founded in 1914 as a manufacturer of chemicals to prevent battery corrosion, the brand has since grown into one of the world’s pre-eminent suppliers of battery chargers, jump starters and other electrical accessories. We at Parkers have long advocated the NOCO name as a byword for quality in the battery charging business, though we allow its products to do most of the talking.

You’ll find the name on several of our relevant battery charging articles, but why should the brand mean anything to you, and why do we laud it so highly? Allow us to explain.

What is NOCO and why is it recommended?

NOCO is a premium American brand founded in 1914, specialising in battery chargers, jump starters, and electrical accessories. The brand is highly regarded for its build quality, reliability, and innovative smart technology. NOCO devices consistently perform well in professional testing and offer excellent durability for both domestic and professional use.

What’s the difference between NOCO jump starters and battery chargers?

Jump starters provide instant power to start a dead battery and double as portable power banks. Battery chargers slowly restore and maintain battery charge over time, ideal for long-term storage or deeply discharged batteries. Jump starters are for emergencies; chargers are for maintenance and recovery.

How we test

Each NOCO device was tested by their own individual merits. If for example, we tested a jump starter, we would base its score on what we look for in a car jump starter, and the same applies to other equipment – such as trickle chargers, smart battery chargers, tyre inflators and so on. You can find the in-depth reviews of each tested product on each of our group tests. In this guide, our aim is to showcase exactly what the NOCO brand offers and how each model line differs from the others.

The Boost range is NOCO’s answer to the jump starter – a portable power unit used to jump-start dead batteries in the absence of a mains power supply. By delivering a short but powerful burst of electricity over the course of a few minutes, a jump starter can kickstart a car battery back into life and with it the engine.

We've tested a couple of NOCO Boost jump starters, and the GB40 is an excellent choice for most UK car drivers. It caters for petrol engines up to 6.0-litres and diesel engines up to 3.0-litres - which covers most vehicles on the UK market, past and present.

Noco gb40

We tried the GB40 in a number of scenarios; we used it to jump start a dead battery on a 2.4-litre Volvo V70. Sure enough, it fired right into action and had enough boost left to do another few. The simplicity and durability of the GB40 makes it a great tool for any emergency jump starting situation. One thing I do criticise is the lack of rubber padding, making things tricky when trying to make it stay in one place.

I have however, used the GB40 a number of times to charge my phone while out on motorway journeys. I usually let it sit in the passenger seat while it charges up my device. It takes a reasonable amount of time, too - roughly 2-hours between 30-100% in my experience. I will never do a journey without a fully-charged jump starter now - they are so much more versatile than most people realise.

I've used the GBX45 on a number of vehicles to feed life back into them. These range from a modern Mazda MX5, classic Audi 80, and the Volvo V70 test vehicle we mentioned above. Without fail, the GBX45 catered for all of them and each car fired up without hesitation - even on the Override setting, when it was needed.

It suffers from the same issue as the GB40, whereby it hasn't got many rubberised pads - meaning it's not the easiest task to keep it in one place in the engine bay. Despite that though, it feels durable enough to sit anywhere underneath the engine without getting damaged. Don't try that for yourself at home, but it does give you that sense of confidence.

NOCO GBX45

In terms of charging my phone, I've found that it does do it relatively quicker than the GB40. Not by much, and I've only used it as and when my phone got to below 40% at the start of a long journey. But it's a very useful power bank - and one that I will keep on using until I don't have to.

If you want an all-in-one device that pumps up your tyres and starts up your engine, allow the AX65 from NOCO be the tool. It's not only a fabulously capable jump starter, but a powerful tyre compressor as well.

In terms of the jump starter side, it can fire up engines up to 8.0-litres in petrol form and 6.0-litres in diesel form. Being an American brand, you can imagine it's designed for all-manner of heavy-duty pickup trucks and such, so it'll more than comfortably cater for smaller, European-market vehicles.

The tyre inflator side is also quite handy; it can pump up a tyre from 0-40PSI in as little as two-minutes. It's ran by a single air compressing piston inside the machine, so it really is a powerful, nifty little device. What's more, it has a USB-C outlet, so you can even use it to charge up your devices.

Quite frankly, it's a brilliant thing having a number of machines all in one, and we at Parkers would love to keep one of these in the boot of all of our cars.

Pros

  • Inflates tyres very quickly - can go from 35-40 PSI in as little as 20-seconds
  • Capable of jump starting very powerful engines, ranging up to 8.0-litres in petrol form
  • USB-C charging for your devices if needed - making the AX65 a versatile machine

Cons

  • There's only so much power than it can hold to perform all three party tricks

The Genius product family is NOCO’s range of battery chargers, though their utility extends further than simple power-ups.

Battery chargers are used to juice batteries back up when low or completely flat, though they can also be used to maintain the batteries in idle cars over long periods of inactivity.

The NOCO Genius 10 is up there with the flagships of the NOCO Genius battery trickle charger range. It starts from the Genius 1, which gives out 1 Amp, and extends to this which gives out 10. Given the higher power rating and faster charging time, the Genius10 would make for a great battery charger that can also keep your 12V unit topped up if your vehicle is stood for a while.

NOCO Genius 10 in testing

While it’s designed to be used as an automotive battery charging tool, this charger, along with the rest of the Genius range, is compatible with most types of vehicles, including lawnmowers, tractors, boats and even hot rods. We tried it on an old vehicle that was parked up for a while.

After a slight hiccup, we managed to get the Genius10 going and it took around ten-hours for the battery to charge from flat to nearly-full. By contrast, the CTEK MXS 5.0 achieved a similar level of charge a few hours quicker, and the MXS 7.0 even faster than that.

For keeping a car topped up while parked for a while - i.e. while on holiday or throughout a season - the Genius10 is an excellent tool for the task.

The best budget NOCO battery charger
The Genius 2 is among NOCO’s smaller, entry-range battery chargers, though still packs a real punch. Designed for six-volt and 12-volt lead-acid automotive batteries, this two-amp charger can revive dead batteries as low as 1-volt, with an integrated thermal sensor to detect ambient temperature and adjust the charge accordingly, so as not to over nor under charge in hot or cold climates.

Like the rest of NOCO’s Genius range, the Genius 2 has built-in smart technology to begin maintaining the life of your battery once fully charged, without touching a button. This charger is also capable of restoring battery performance thanks to NOCO’s acid stratification detection technology.

Light, compact and powerful, for under £50, this is a lot of battery charger for a great price - and a great option if you're looking for a NOCO on a slightly tighter budget.

Pros

  • Great value for money at a little over £50 for the whole unit
  • Solid, durable materials and build quality throughout
  • Easy to use and works excellently as a battery trickle charger

Cons

  • Won't charge up a battery as quickly as a Genius10 or equivilent device

The best all-round NOCO battery charger
Sitting in the middle of the NOCO Genius range, the 5 is one of the most popular models from the brand. It represents ample trickle charging capabilities at a relatively affordable price point. It pumps out 5A and is suitable for both 6 and 12V batteries.

It has just one button to control the different modes and a handy indicator that tells you how far the battery is from being fully charged. It's as simple as it gets in the world of battery charging.

With that being said, don't expect it to charge that quickly. Our experience with the NOCO Genius10 tells us that the 5 will take longer to fully recharge a battery from flat. However, it is supported by a three-year warranty which is handy for any consumer.

Pros

  • Excellent all-round charger and trickle charger for most vehicles
  • Durable materials and excellent build quality throughout, just like the Genius10 and others
  • Relatively affordable at under £80 for the unit

Cons

  • Isn't going to be the quickest machine at charging up a battery from flat

This example, the PRO 25, boasts a 25 amp power rating for fast and efficient charging across a range of voltages, including six-volt, 12-volt and 24-volt batteries. Included with the charger is a set of industrial-grade ultra-flexible silicone cables – effective down to -40°- with braided shielding for maximum protection.

While this may be overkill for most motorists, for absolute reliability in the toughest of conditions, this is one of the best battery chargers on the market.

Pros

  • Ideal for heavy-duty and professional environments
  • Capable in extreme tempretures (down to -40 degrees)
  • Can be used for both 12V and 24V batteries, making it very versatile
