Your campervan really is a home from home, and the heart and soul of most homes is the kitchen; now, it’s generally an easy job to get the kitchen utensils sorted out, but one way to make your cooking as adventurous as your road trip is to invest in a campervan oven. Two of life’s great joys – food and travel and just because you’re on the road, there’s no need to sacrifice the quality of the latter.

The days of heating a canteen of water over a single gas burner are long gone. We’ve become much more sophisticated, likewise, our expectations, so it’s no surprise that there are a number of options to assist in making mouth-watering meals on the move (well, not literally, pull over first) from compact, built-in campervan ovens that can roast, grill, and bake to clever portable stovetop devices that transform any heat source to allow you to flex your cooking muscle.

Just because you are on the road, it doesn’t mean that your mealtimes should suffer. Part of the joy of a road trip is the shared experience of successfully cooking lunch or the evening meal, relaxing and enjoying good food and good company. Just have a look at some of these campervan ovens that could unleash your hidden nomadic Gordon Ramsay. Now please don’t swear as you cook; it’s before the watershed!

Best ovens for campervans

Editor's choice

The 22780 Mini Kitchen from Russell Hobbs is a compact, space-saving multi-cooker just perfect for installation in your campervan kitchen. There’s a double hotplate and a 30-litre oven, which, while it may not be huge, should be versatile enough to allow you to get a bit creative. There’s a grill function, too (you can’t go wrong with a slice of toast), and the timer has an auto shut-off and a bell to tell you when everything is ready.

It's a nice, basic, compact multi-cooker which should give you a great deal more flexibility with your meals on the road.

Pros

  • Compact
  • Includes a double hotplate

Cons

  • Can’t use the oven and hob at the same time

Best for quick meals

Now this may seem like a bit of a controversial choice, as microwave ovens are notorious for needing huge amounts of power to operate. Most UK campsites offer ten or 16-amp hookups which would be fine for a 900W microwave requiring about 7.5 amps, but that would be far too much for the average European hookup (which is generally around 5 or 6 amps). So, this Comfee 700W needs only around 4.5 amps, and you’re unlikely to be running it for any great length of time.

If you are concerned, you can even select one of the lower power settings. It has a manual timer, as you don’t want to faff around with setting the clock every time you plug it in, quick defrost and a 20-litre capacity.

Pros

  • Microwave convenience
  • Easily stored away

Cons

  • Large power consumption

Best for storage

From the hi-tech delights of microwave cooking, let's get back to basics with this Winnerwell Camp Oven. It’s been designed for use with wood-burning stoves but will happily work with just about any stable heat source. A glass viewing window and integrated thermometer help you keep an eye on baking foods, and the stainless steel construction means it’s durable, corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. The bonus is that when it’s not in use, it can be folded flat for easy storage.

Pros

  • Easily stored
  • Stainless steel construction

Cons

  • Requires a heat source

Best plug and go choice

Campervan cooking doesn’t get much more straightforward than this handy 24-volt mini oven from All Ride. To fire it up, you just plug it into your campervan cigar lighter socket, select the mode you require (baking, grilling or toasting) and set the timer, although it does take a little longer to heat up than a conventional oven, and the outside can get hot. It has a 9-litre capacity and comes with a grill and griddle. The freestanding design means that it is easily stored away when not in use.

Pros

  • Easy to set up
  • No installation is required

Cons

  • Can only be powered from the cigar lighter socket

Best for temperature control

The NJ CO-01 Portable Camping Gas Oven gives you a stove with fully adjustable heat control dials, automatic piezo ignition and an oven which is fully adjustable up to 300 degrees Celsius. You can keep an eye on how the meal is progressing through the tempered glass door panel, and the thermometer display will let you know that things are progressing at the correct temperature.

Just a quick note - if you are installing it inside your campervan, be sure to leave a sufficient gap at the rear as it can get hot.

Pros

  • Fully adjustable oven temperature
  • Piezo ignition

Cons

  • The rear can get hot

Best stovetop solution

Price: $79.99
If you already have a cooking heat source you are happy with in your campervan, this handy device from Omnia can provide you with an instant stove-top oven. The three-part Omnia utilises heat from the stove and generates heat above and below. The food is placed in the circular aluminium food container; you put on the lid and place it on your heat source. That’s where the unusual design comes into play. The heat spreads from the bottom and rises through the specially designed middle vent into the lid to heat the air above the food as well. You may have to get a little bit inventive with your food due to its unusual shape.

Pros

  • Simple to use
  • Great if you don’t have access to a conventional oven

Cons

  • Unusual shape

Best solar solution

Rrp: $59.97

Price: $49.97
Ok, so the Energy Wise Solar Oven is probably not what you want to depend on as your primary cooking source. But if you are in an area where you get reasonable amounts of sunshine, this can be used to save a bit of gas or electricity. It’s foldable and comes with its own carry bag. Cooking temperatures will vary depending on how strong the sun is, but you should get temperatures of between 150 and 210 degrees Fahrenheit which may mean you have to wait slightly longer for things to cook.

Pros

  • No power source is needed
  • Folds flat

Cons

  • No use in poor weather conditions

What type of campervan oven should I go for?

Campervan ovens provide a convenient and efficient way to prepare meals while on the road, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked food even in remote locations. They come in various types, including gas ovens, electric ovens, and portable ovens, each with its own advantages and limitations.

Gas ovens are a popular choice due to their energy efficiency and versatility. They typically use propane or butane gas as a fuel source, allowing for quick and even cooking. Gas ovens often feature multiple burners and temperature control, enabling users to prepare a wide range of dishes. However, it’s essential to ensure proper ventilation and safety measures while using gas ovens inside a campervan.

Electric ovens are another option, especially for those with access to electrical hookups or solar power systems. These ovens rely upon a stable power source to function effectively. Electric ovens provide precise temperature control and consistent cooking results. However, their power consumption may be a concern for those relying solely on battery power.

Portable ovens offer you a flexible cooking solution. These compact and lightweight ovens can be easily transported and used both inside and outside the vehicle. Portable ovens often utilize propane gas canisters or electricity for operation, providing flexibility depending on the available resources. While they may have smaller capacities and limited cooking options compared to built-in ovens, portable ovens are ideal for those seeking a more versatile cooking experience during their camping adventures.

Whether you opt for a gas oven, electric oven, or portable oven, each type offers its own advantages in terms of efficiency, convenience, and cooking capabilities.
