Sometimes, nothing beats a simple slice of toast, but when you’re away exploring the great outdoors, a camping toaster will be required to complete your camping cookware.

Most motorhomes may have a socket and be able to support one electrical item as such, but space is always limited. However, if you can’t escape the want for a bit of toast while you’re away camping, don’t fret – we’ve found plenty of options that will turn your bread crispy with a bit of gas. They aren’t as fancy as a camping shower or portable blender, but they are still a delight to have by a fireside.

If it’s more than just a toaster you’re after, Parker’s has you covered with the best portable firepits – amongst campfire cooking guides and campfire tripods – it’s fair to say that at Parkers, we have your campfire culinary down to a tee. So get your jam ready because here’s a lovely little list of options for you all for under £20. Lovely jubbly.

Up to two slices of toast at a time with the fold-down handle, you can quickly and safely take your toast off the heat when you're at the perfect level of crispiness. This Bright Spark camping toaster will fit perfectly if you already have a bright spark gas cooker. With the stainless-steel construction, you should get excellent results time after time.

Pros

  • Detachable handle
  • Evenly toasts up to two slices

Cons

  • Can be difficult to get rid of old crumbs
Best for multiple slices

We've seen many designs like this Coghlans Camp Stove Toaster, but we consider this the original and probably the most trustworthy – you can toast up to four slices of toast at once over a camping gas stove or travel barbecue with this clever little device. The legs that hold the bread, which packs flat, can be folded down after use. The only downside here is that this isn't the quickest way to brown your toast – heat can get lost quickly, especially in a breeze, which means you're burning valuable cooking gas. But, if you've got plenty of cover, you should be fine.

Pros

  • Toasts up to four slices
  • Folds flat

Cons

  • Toasting can be a bit uneven
Best for portability

The Primus camping toaster may be best for the solo traveller, as it only holds one slice of toast at a time. Its fold-flat design means it's a space saver if you're travelling light, and it has a lovely little handle to make sure you can pull your toast away from the flames if it's getting a bit burnt.

When it's folded out, the bottom of the Primus will protect the bread from any big flames and dissipate the heat.

Pros

  • Toasts quickly
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Bread has to be moved around on smaller flames for even toasting
Best traditional option

Let's strip it back to basics, and you don't get any more basic than the humble toasting fork. There's not an awful lot which needs to be said about this Cookware Toasting fork other than it involves users skewering the bread, holding it above flames and watching it toast. The fork is, of course, versatile – you can toast marshmallows, cook sausages or use it for any other form of cooking. Just watch the pointy bits when packing it away.

Pros

  • Get back to camping basics
  • Not just for toast, can be used for other foods

Cons

  • Not as sturdy as expected
Best for toasties

Okay – we know it's not strictly a toaster, but it will toast bread; what's more, it's a toastie maker. If there's one thing we enjoy more than a lovely buttery piece of toast, it's when it has melted cheese oozing out of it as a toastie.

The non-stick coating and double-hinged pan - which can separate to make two very convenient griddle pans - make this Outdoor Revolution Camping Sandwich Maker seem like a brilliant choice.

Pros

  • Makes two toasties at once
  • Non-stick coating

Cons

  • Handles can't be removed for storage
Best for convenience
We better own up - we have almost broken the £20 rule here, and we know this is an actual toaster so useless to those who are camping. However, if you're in a motorhome or caravan, this low-wattage option will have you making round after round of toast without a second thought. The Quest 2-Slice Toaster comes with all the special mod-cons of a toaster, a crumb tray (ooh), browning control (aah) and a cancel button (another noise of approval and amazement).

Pros

  • Convenience
  • No fuss

Cons

  • Electrical power needed

How the experts make the perfect toast while camping:

There really is nothing better than some tasty toast while camping. Not only is it delicious, but the process can be just as delightful. Here’s a simple method to achieve delicious toast over a campfire:

Ingredients and materials:

Bread
Butter or cooking oil (optional)
Long-handled toasting fork or skewer
Campfire or fire pit

Instructions:

Start by building a campfire or using a fire pit. Allow the fire to burn down to a bed of hot coals. This provides a more even and controlled heat for toasting.

Hold the toasting fork or skewer over the fire, a few inches above the coals, to preheat it. This prevents the bread from sticking and helps achieve an even toasting.

This part is optional: Butter or oil the bread: spread a thin layer of butter or cooking oil on one or both sides of the bread slices. This can give you extra flavour and prevent the toast from drying out.

Take one slice of bread and place it securely onto the toasting fork or skewer. Make sure it’s centred and won’t easily slide off during toasting.

Hold the toasting fork with the bread over the hot coals while making sure it is at a safe distance from the flames. Move the fork as required to achieve even toasting on all sides. Watch as the bread changes colour and toast it to your desired shade.

Serve and enjoy: Once all the slices are toasted, remove them from the toasting fork and serve them warm. You can enjoy the toast with some additional butter or add toppings, just don’t forget the right cutlery.
