MG 5 2022

MG has revealed the updated MG 5 estate. Set to go on sale in the UK in the first quarter of 2022, it's expected to cost from £25,000.

Below, we highlight some details.

What’s new?

The most notable change comes at the front end, where it gets a much smoother design with the removal of the traditional horizontal grille lines in favour of a narrow band stretched across the nose. The overall look is closer in style to other electric vehicles such as the Kia Niro. The charging port is clearly identifiable on the front of the car, too, rather than being hidden behind the MG badge.

Other, visual changes include a new headlight design and new styling on the lower part of the front end.

How about inside?

The visual changes are less dramatic on the inside, but there is still a notable shake up to the central console and screen. The vents have moved from above the screen to below it and gain a touch of blue. The screen is no longer integrated into the dash and instead juts out prominently, tablet style.

The screen itself plays host to the biggest update, though, as it will be where you get to control MG's new iSMART connectivity system. This allows you to control various functions remotely via the smartphone app or via voice control by saying 'Hi MG.' It also allows you a degree of connectivity, with over-the-air updates, real-time traffic information, parking space search, weather forecasting and audio streaming for music.

What battery options are there?

The MG 5 will launch with a 61.1kWh battery with a 249 mile range while a 51kWh model will follow with a 199 mile range. Both are paired to the same 154bhp motor with 260Nm of torque.

The space inside the 5 is unchanged. So it has a 479-litre boot. That expands to 1,367 litres with the rear seats folded.

How much will it cost?

The final pricing and spec details are yet to be confirmed, but MG has said that the 5 will start at less than £25,497 when it goes on sale.

What this means for you

Britain's cheapest estate is competent, comes with a seven-year warranty, and is available with 0% APR. It's biggest flaw is just how bland it is.

This latest update looks set to change things. Even adding a drop more of desirability might make the difference when choosing your next car.
