Originally, the Kalos scored just two stars (with one struck through) in the Euro NCAP – which is the worst score the organisation has awarded in many years. However, after a recent re-test the Kalos has now been awarded three stars, which is a marked improvement but still below the class average. There’s ABS on all models and most cars get four airbags, three-point seatbelts for all passengers and Isofix mountings for child seats.
It is important to be aware that a rearward-facing child seat should not be used in the front passenger’s seat as there is no option to deactivate the airbag. Security measures include an alarm, immobiliser and central locking.
At 220 litres, the boot is big enough for a modest family shop. Fold down the seats (which are split 70:30) and load space increases to 980 litres which, when combined with a wide opening tailgate, gives enough load space for everyday tasks. Aircraft-style flip-up trays in the back are useful for the drive-thrus.
Euro NCAP Rating
The Chevrolet Kalos (05-08) was tested by Euro NCAP in and received the following safety ratings:
Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
