The Materia’s interior is especially striking. Most of the instruments are in the centre of the dash, the stereo controls are simple and chunky while the large air vents and speakers are prominent at the front. It’s all fairly easy to use, although the digital fuel gauge is small and can be hard to read. The large windscreen and wide side windows give good forward visibility, though it’s not so good at the rear, where the view is impaired by those distinctive rear pillars.

The steering wheel adjusts for height only (not reach), which makes finding a comfortable driving position more difficult.

Rear passengers are treated to a huge amount of space. The square shape provides lots of headroom and there’s a suprising amount of rear legroom. Where it’s let down in the back is the quality of the rear seats. They have little shape, are unsupportive and passengers won’t find them comfortable on longer trips. The Materia is also noisy at higher speeds with engine, wind and road noise all evident.
