Parkers overall rating: 4.6 out of 5 4.6
  • Excellent room in both the front and rear
  • Legroom in the back is especially good
  • Average storage space in the front

Up front, the Focus boasts an excellent amount of space. There’s plenty of adjustment in the seats, too, meaning most people should be able to get comfortable without any issue.

Move into the back and, because of a wheelbase that’s been extended by 53mm, there’s 50mm extra legroom – which makes the Focus hatchback one of the most spacious cars in its class. Shoulder room is also excellent (60mm improvement over the old car), while thanks to a relatively flat floor there’s enough room for an average-sized adult in the middle seat.

What’s also pleasing is that the view from the back seats is good, unlike alternatives such as the Toyota Corolla. Go for an ST and you’ll find that its sporty Recaro seats don’t compromise rear legroom much, either.

Storage space isn’t as generous, however. Both the glovebox and central armrest could be larger and there are no neat or clever storage solutions. The door pockets, on the flip side, are deceptively big.

The Ford Focus doesn’t feel that big when out on the road, but at nearly two meters wide (including door mirrors) and 4.4m in length it’s far larger than the original Focus launched back in 1998.

Visibility is generally good, although the chunky rear pillars are more than capable of obscuring a pedestrian or lamppost. Front and rear parking sensors aren’t standard on all versions, so make sure you spec them up if you’re not a confident parker. Automatic parking is also available as an option.

With the rear seats in place the Focus falls just shy of the Golf’s luggage capacity. Even with the seats folded down, it’s still some way off the cavernous Skoda Octavia.

The boot is at least a useful shape, with minimal intrusion from the wheel housings. However, there is a small lip from the entrance of the boot to the boot floor, so bear this in mind when loading heavy items.

Folded down in their standard 60:40 split, the rear seats sit almost flat and enable long items to be slid forwards with relative ease. Vignale models come with a load-through ski hatch.

Owners of the previous-generation Focus STs may remember the inability to easily and legally tow with their vehicle, thanks to the placement of the rear central exhaust. This generation ST, however, doesn’t suffer from the same problem as the exhausts are now placed towards the outer edges of the rear bumper. For reference, the maximum braked towing mass is 1,600kg for the petrol and 1,800kg for the EcoBlue diesel.

Safety

  • Five-star rating from Euro NCAP
  • Two Isofix points as standard
  • Plenty of safety technology on offer

The Ford Focus is available with a range of safety technology designed to keep the car out of harm’s way and protect the driver. Its safety credentials have been validated by Euro NCAP, which rated it as a five-star car when it was tested in summer 2018.

Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection technology is standard-fit on all models and can detect people in or near the road ahead, or if they’re about to cross the road in front of the car. If it detects a potential collision, the driver is warned, then the brakes are automatically applied.

Other safety technology on the Focus includes:

  • Evasive Steering Assist, that steers around a stationary or slower-moving vehicle if the car detects that a collision is imminent
  • Blindspot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert, warns drivers (and can automatically brake the vehicle) if another vehicle is approaching when reversing out of a space
  • A reversing camera

  • Adaptive front lighting with Predictive Curve Light and Sign-based Light – capable of adjusting the light beam to give better visibility through corners and when coming up to junctions
  • Post-collision braking, where the brakes are automatically applied after an impact to help prevent a secondary collision

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Ford Focus Hatchback was tested by Euro NCAP in 2018 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2018
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 85%
Child Occupant: 87%
Pedestrian: 72%
Safety Assist: 75%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
