Despite coming with a wide range of safety equipment, the Compass received a disappointing two-star result in Euro NCAP testing. This low rating was mostly a result of poor pedestrian protection, with the Jeep’s nose and bonnet liable to cause significant injuries to anyone hit by them. This limited the Compass to a maximum of two stars. Jeep Compass safety equipment is, however, relatively comprehensive and includes side impact beams, multistage front airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, active head restraints, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and an electronic roll mitigation system (ERM) that helps keep prevent the wheels lifting off the ground during severe or evasive manoeuvres.

Hill start assist is fitted to manual versions, preventing the vehicle from rolling back if the brake is released. The doors also lock automatically once the vehicle is on the move but they will unlock in the event of an accident.

Appealing to both individuals and families alike, the Compass features a host of touches to make it more practical. There are lots of storage pockets, cup holders and a 12v charging socket in a large central storage bin. A neat little feature is that the boot light unclips to operate as a rechargeable torch, which could be useful on a dark wintry night.

With the seats in place the Compass has 458 litres of boot space. Drop the rear seats, which fold flat, and boot space increases to a substantial 1,269 litres. The front passenger seat also folds down, to assist with carrying longer loads. The top-specification 2.2-litre CRD 4×4 is rated to tow a braked trailer of up to 2000kg.
