The MG ZS is based on the old Rover 400, which doesn’t sound particularly exciting at all. However, thanks to input from race team Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), and a number of modifications under the skin as well as aesthetically, the result is a very different animal indeed.

It was available both as the MG ZS Hatchback and the MG ZS Saloon, and made use of a number of engines for high performance driving without necessarily breaking the bank. The petrol offerings were 1.6- and 1.8-litre Rover K-Series units, which were used in numerous cars and unfortunately were known for their unreliability.

There was also a lightweight, all-alloy 2.5-litre V6 heading up the range. This flagship car was known as the MG ZS 180 and could be distinguished from lesser ZSs by its larger rear spoiler, which you could delete as a no-cost option if you didn’t want to stand out.
