The 2.2 dCi engine offers punch with diesel frugality and would be our choice. Original Di diesels are only available on the used market. These are old-school units, noisy and unrefined so you’re better off with a dCi, if you can afford one. All engines on offer are smooth and have ample power. Some are matched with six-speed gearboxes.

Rides more softly than its predecessors but retains excellent steering feel and body control. Low speed ride picks up the smallest imperfections in the road. The handling has been much improved over the old model, but it’s no class leader. A further revision in 2004 sharpened the handling further and made the ride more comfortable
