Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 33 - 64 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

There are low insurance groups on most models but the diesels offer the best low cost option as they also retain their used values slightly better than their thirstier petrol counterparts. Comparatively though the Megane does not keep its value very well.

The Megane performs fairly very well on the eco front. With an average of 157g/km of CO2 across the model line-up, its emissions are relatively low for a small family hatchback. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 1.5-litre diesel, which is one of the greenest models in the range. The range is impressively frugal, averaging 47 mpg.

Early models were far from immune to problems. Squealing brakes, water leaks, loose trim, loss of power and gear selection are just a few. More recent cars seem to be better built and complaints are decreasing. Interior fit and finish was improved further in 2006, but there have been numerous recalls for this Megane.
