The estate gained the maximum five stars for occupant protection in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) so the Saab 9-3 Sportwagon safety levels should be strong. Six airbags are standard, as are active front head restraints that reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. There are also various chassis safety systems, although an electronic stability is not standard below Vector Sport models.

It may be more versatile than the 9-3 saloon, but the Sportwagon doesn’t match a BMW 3-Series Touring for carrying capacity and is some way behind alternative estates like the Honda Accord Tourer and Volkswagen Passat. Maximum luggage capacity is 1,273 litres, but is compromised as the rear seats don’t quite fold flat. There is a ski hatch as will as split folding rear seats.
