Suzuki Grand Vitara: value

Family car that delivers on value

When money is tight and budgets are limited, maximising your car-buying cash is extremely important. This is where the Grand Vitara scores highly: it can accommodate five adults in comfort and the sizeable boot can take two suitcases plus a couple of overnight bags. It can more than take care of most families' motoring needs.

The SZ 5 version is the top-of-the-range Grand Vitara that comes packed with equipment, including leather interior, heated seats, electric windows, tinted privacy glass, heated and folding electric door mirrors, six-CD player and audio controls on the steering wheel. You also get cruise control mounted on the steering wheel that makes motorway and major A-road cruising a relaxed affair.

But what really makes the Vitara's stand out is its excellent value for money and its rivals simply cannot compete. An equivalent Toyota Rav 4 2.2-litre D-4D XTR that has a similar specification costs £24,895 compared to the Suzuki's £21,020 - a saving of £3,875.

The Toyota does have better running costs, returning 48mpg against the Suzuki's 40mpg, but you need to do a lot of miles before you make up the purchase price difference. The RAV 4 also enjoys a lower road tax band thanks to lower CO2 emissions than the Grand Vitara, but again, the difference in cost is not massive - £175 versus £150.

While the Vitara's running costs aren't the cheapest in class, its purchase price makes it one of the best value buys in its class.
