Parkers overall rating: 4 out of 5 4.0
  • Passenger space is on a par with rivals
  • Smaller boot for most powerful 2.0-litre engine
  • Rear-view camera standard on all models

The latest Toyota Corolla benefits from a larger platform over its predecessor, resulting in a longer wheelbase and wider stance. While that sees benefits for the driver's seating position, interior ergonomics and added safety tech, passenger and boot space hasn't changed dramatically.

That’s not particularly bad news as there’s an adequate level of space for four passengers in the first place, with a supportive rear bench. Visibility is good up front, while the large door mirrors and light steering allows for easy parking manoeuvres. Rear visibility is slightly compromised with its small rear windows and thick pillars, but thankfully, if you choose above the entry-level Icon model and a rear-view camera and parking sensors for the front and rear come as standard.

Opt for the 1.8-litre engine and boot capacity remains roughly the same as the outgoing Auris at 361 litres. The boot floor is low, but heavier, bulkier items will need to be lifted above a high sill.

Choose the 2.0-litre and this suffers from a smaller 313-litre boot. There’s also a raised floor due to the larger battery, which quickly limits the number of luggage cases that can fit in here. Those looking for even more space for rear passengers and in the boot should look to the estate bodystyle, badged Touring Sports.

Extra storage around the interior isn’t particularly remarkable. The door bins are large, although access for bigger items is limited and a pair of cupholders on the centre console can accommodate 500ml-sized bottles. There’s a tray large enough for smartphones by the heated seat buttons and there’s a front centre armrest. The glovebox is wide and free from intrusion though.

Safety

  • Five-star Euro NCAP rating
  • Plenty of electronic systems to keep you safe
  • Seven airbags standard across the range

Toyota is quite big in the driver assistance game and its pack of sensors and cameras (called Safety Sense) sold in big numbers.

This time, all models come with:

The last feature also comes with a new wider angle and higher resolution camera to make night-time pedestrian and day-time cyclist detection possible.

Every model has seven airbags, automatic LED headlights, Isofix attachments on the two outer rear seats, electronic stability control, tyre-pressure monitoring system and adaptive cruise control as standard - some rivals charge extra for the latter. The optional heads up display is claimed to be the largest in the segment too.

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback was tested by Euro NCAP in 2019 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2019
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 95%
Child Occupant: 84%
Vulnerable Road Users: 86%
Safety Assist: 77%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
