BMW 5-Series M5 5.0 V10 Saloon 4d SMG (2006/55)

Summary

2 out of 5

What does this car say about you?
-

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
They all loved it.

Would you buy this car again and why?
No. Too many issues with the gearbox/SMG unit. Could end up costing thousands to repair and it's a common fault of these cars.

What are you likely to buy next?
I've just replaced it with a Mercedes ML320 Edition10. Super smooth compared to the M5.

Buying experience

4 out of 5

Type of dealer you bought from?
Franchised

Did you buy this car new?
Used

What price did you pay?
£17,500

When did you buy the car?
December 2012

Did you get a good deal and why?
I got a reasonable deal. Was misadvertised as having bluetooth when it didn't but the dealer took care of this and agreed to install factory BMW bluetooth, can't ask anymore.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
I had an M3. Wanted an M5 because it has the power but is also a family car. The M3 was amazing so I assumed this would be the same if not better.

What was the dealer like?
Very helpful.

Driving it

What's it like to drive?
Stuck to the road, great handling. Acceleration like nothing else for this price. Unreal.

What's it like to park?
It's massive. Like a barge. Crap turning circle too.

Living with it

Have you had any problems with the car?
Handbrake seized on - common fault with 5 series, especially the M5 due to brake dust build up in the mechanism. Gearbox/SMG unit/Clutch problems - I'm being vague here because this is what made me take the car back. The dealer tried to cure the problems (rattling/clunking noise and jerky gear change in every gear) but couldn't do so without stripping the whole gearbox out. They offered me a deal on another car instead. Squeaky boot mechanism. Faulty oil sensor. It's digital, no dipstick!

What's most practical about your car?
The interior space. Lots of it. Big boot also.

Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
Alcantara roof lining was nice. Nothing else really stood out. iDrive is garbage in my opinion, others like it though.
