Peugeot 405 Saloon 1988
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Select with care, but there are lots about now and they are cheap as chips.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Look out for worn driveshafts and smoky engines, but otherwise cheap spares, especially from scrapyards, and at 47mpg the room and performance you get can't be beaten.

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

    Firm, great handling.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Surprisingly nippy, although the turbo doesn't kick in until high rpm reached, but when it does, it goes very quickly. The Peugeot Citroen turbo-D engine absolutely buried my brothers P-reg Mondeo Turbo Diesel.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

It was old when I bought it, so I had the usual replacements of driveshafts, cambelt and battery, but otherwise mechanically sound, and a great starter, even in cold weather.

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Image is of course a personal thing, but I think the lines of this car, especially with the rear spoiler, are great; still better than some of the more modern rounded edges.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Roomy and very comfy to drive and ride in. The French care for their bottoms obviously.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Too early for immobilisers and alarms. Newer models have them. Locks seem OK though, never had a problem with the central locking.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

Go to the Peugeot Express fit places - parts and labour are quite reasonable.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Fantastic, now on 169,000 miles (70,000 of which I have done).

    Other

Electric windows now getting dodgy. K-reg or later models have better design of S/R and will prevent costly sunroof repairs.

    Ownership

Did you buy the car new?

    Used

Would you buy the same model again?

    Yes

Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?

    Yes
