Other Porsche 944 (1982 - 1992) models:

  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

It's a modern classic and I think it looks great. Girls love it. On the downside it still has a bit of 'poor man's Porsche' stigma, but that's usually from other Porsche drivers. Ford Focus STs tailgate you everywhere you go.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

My girlfriend prefers it to her BMW 330d M-Sport. My father tells me I am making up for something. I enjoy telling people my everyday car is the same age as me.

Would you buy this car again and why?

If I were to buy another 944 I'd get a turbo, but if the right opportunity arose. I have no intention of selling.

What are you likely to buy next?

I'd like something mid-engined next, but doesn't have to be a Porsche.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Didn't buy from a dealer

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £4,000

When did you buy the car?

    October 2011

Did you get a good deal and why?

Absolutely. My friend's grandfather bought the car (an ex-demo) new from a Porsche main dealer in 1985. The family are car fanatics, so I knew it had been looked after, but it's only covered 60k miles in almost 30 years,.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I wasn't looking for a new car, but a friend's family had owned the car since new and were looking to sell. I knew it had been looked after, so it was an offer that was too good to refuse.

    What was the dealer like?

  • Driving it

    4 out of 5 4.0

    What's it like to drive?

Very satisfying. It's very well balanced and predictable (which is helpful on wet roundabouts). It's not 'fast', but the power is delivered smoothly and the engine likes to be revved. The steering is precise, but it's heavier than on modern cars and it has a tendency to track so you need to pay attention. It's very smooth on the motorway. Copes fine with speed bumps.

    What's it like to park?

Easy. I live in South London and have no trouble parking it. Great rear visibility. My girlfriend finds the heavy steering heavy going however.

Have you had any problems with the car?

Nothing. Just about everything works except for the heated rear windscreen.

What's most practical about your car?

It has a surprisingly big boot and although it doesn't make a huge difference, the rear seats fold down to give you a bit more space if you need it.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

I have yet to meet anybody who doesn't like flip-up headlights.
