Renault 5 Hatchback 1985-
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Cheap and reliable motoring. Not much to play with, but ok for a runaround.

Renault parts aren't cheap, so go for pattern parts from a factor or visit one of the many specialist breakers yards. Loads of stuff available on eBay, too. Insurance can be expensive because of 1.6 engine in small car. Expect 55-60mpg.

Gutsy 1.6 diesel pulls impressively. Handling is good once you get used to the quirky french style, but the big, heavy oil-burner up front tends to push the nose wide in corners. Overall, surprisingly good fun for a small, non-turbo diesel.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Pretty good, considering. Not a sporty drive (go for a GT Turbo for that) but will cruise comfortably at 70 and is lively around town. Sounds like a tractor first thing in the morning!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Never any bother, even with 265,000 miles on the clock!

    2 out of 5 2.0

R5 used to be trendy, but is past it now, although still popular with students. Diesel clatter destroys any remaining 'coolness' once started!

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not the most supportive seats in the world. Gave me backache driving from Staffordshire to Sussex. Driving position ok, but wind noise can be intrusive on the motorway.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Might as well leave the doors open and the keys in the ignition! Unlikely to be joyridden and becoming less popular with car thieves. More likely to be taken by someone on the way home from the pub. Fit a steering lock and keep everything out of sight.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Renault dealers pricey but helpful (one actually recommended that I should go to the local motor factors rather than buy from them!). DIY servicing is fiddly and messy with the diesel, but fairly straightforward.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

With regular servicing, it will still be going with 500,000 miles under it's belt!

    Other

Generally no problems, but battery must be in good condition, otherwise starting becomes a chore.
