FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Alfa Romeo 4C

  • What is the Alfa Romeo 4C?
  • The 4C is a small, lightweight, mid-engined sportscar from Italian outfit Alfa Romeo that's no longer for sale.

It was on sale for five years in the UK between 2013 and 2018 in coupe form, although the convertible version, called the Spider, soldiered on until 2019. Being a small sportscar, its competitors are the likes of the BMW Z4, Porsche Cayman, Lotus Elise, and Audi TT. There's no denying that it's pretty, but as sportscars go, it leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Which versions of the Alfa Romeo 4C are available?
  • As mentioned above, the 4C is no longer on sale. But, the used scene is awash with Spiders and Coupes. Spiders were on sale for longer, meaning there should be a few more of those around.

All cars come with the same 1.75-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that sits just behind the driver.

In terms of trim levels, there aren't many to choose from. When the Coupe was launched, there was a special edition snappily named the Launch Edition. While the Spider was available in 50th anniversary edition spec too. This celebrated 50 years since the first Alfa Romeo Spider was released.

While we're here, let's get this out of the way. Despite being a sportscar, the 4C is not available with a manual gearbox - a real kick in the teeth for serious car enthusiasts. Your only option is a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.
  • What is the Alfa Romeo 4C Performance Version?
  • There's no performance version of the 4C per se. All cars get that 240hp 1.75-litre engine, and as mentioned above, there were very few trim levels to choose from.

It's worth noting that there was an optional extra called Race Pack - this brought with it stickier tyres, larger wheels (18in front 19in rear), stiffer springs and dampers, and a sports exhaust that makes the engine sound much fruitier and more exotic than it actually is.
  • Is the Alfa Romeo 4C good to drive?
  • Yes, yes, very yes. But also no. The 4C is very much a split personality. When you hit the right road, it comes on song like Pavarotti on heat - but most of the rest of the time, it's an acquired taste that'll prove difficult to live with. It's powerful, though - it may only have a 1.75-litre four-cylinder engine, but it makes 240hp and sounds mean and angry while doing so. Peak pulling happens as low as 2,000rpm and 0-62mph comes up in 4.5 seconds. Top speed is 160mph. Double wishbone suspension and a full carbon monocoque tub and aluminium chassis make the 4C extremely stiff. That could also be said of the unassisted steering, though, which is rather difficult to get used to.
  • Should I buy an Alfa Romeo 4C?
  • If you want a new car, then no. If you want a sportscar of a more muscular frame, like a Ford Mustang, it's also a no. But, if you're after something that puts weight-saving at the core of its remit, then not much comes close to the 4C. It's not as good to drive as a Lotus Elis, but little is.

The main draw for the 4C is the way it looks. Super low, svelte, and achingly pretty, it really is every bit the junior Ferrari, without the price tag or running costs. And if that floats your boat, we'd heartily recommend one.
