Should you buy one?

Oh yes. Well, at least the M240i xDrive. It’s a car that’s brimming with that Friday feeling, which makes it great to drive, it sounds fantastic, and even looks good (something you can’t say about many other new BMWs). The new Coupe takes the excellent underpinnings of the 4 Series and runs with them to create a really desirable car.

The positive points are the steering, which is accurate and gives the 2 Series Coupe real agility, which is backed up by excellent, balanced handling that makes it genuinely fun. The six-cylinder engine in the M240i is a real gem – powerful and responsive when you want to make rapid progress, and quiet and refined when you don’t. And at all times, it sounds great.

What we like

The handling, the performance and the steering are the lead story with these cars – but it’s also roomy for two plus their luggage and all models are economical considering the performance on offer.

What we don’t like

In a coupe, rear-seat room is not particularly a priority, but we’d still like to see a little more space than there is on offer. The ride quality, too, isn’t great, and if you live in a city or regularly travel along poorly-surfaced roads, you might find it a little too uncomfortable for too much of the time. The four-cylinder engines also sound a little uncouth.
