There’s no official Euro NCAP crash safety rating for the 6-Series, but the 1-Series and 3-Series which were launched at a similar time, both achieved the maximum five star rating for adult occupant safety. BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control is supplemented by five additional safety features to create DSC+. These include brake drying (which applies the pads to the discs in wet conditions to clear a film of water), brake pre-tensioning and brake fade compensation which recognises brake temperature rises and automatically increases brake pressure to prevent any fading.

The rear seats are cramped enough but getting in and out of them is a real squeeze, however on the plus side the boot is large and will easily swallow a golf bag and a decent amount of luggage. The boot opens wide too, although the luggage area itself isn’t particularly wide. An optional ski hatch allows longer items (like skis!) to be carried and there’s also a first aid kit conveniently located between the rear two seats.

There’s no dash mounted cupholder – instead there’s a chunky cupholder stored in a special cubby in the back – but when attached it’s too big and clutters up the centre console.
