For a two-seat convertible space in the BMW Z4 isn’t bad. Its boot is a decent size that will take a suitcase and overnight bag, and if you keep the roof up you can increase the amount of boot space by collapsing the storage compartment for the roof out of the way. The fabric roof itself drops at a touch of the button and takes just ten seconds to open or close.

The Z4 was awarded a four star Euro NCAP rating for crash safety, which is on par with other roadsters of its time. It’s fitted with a host of electronic safety aids such as fixed roll-over hoops and four airbags. Cars built after 2006 also get brake pre-tensioning, which primes the brakes if the car anticipates a potential accident situation. There’s also a brake drying function, which removes water from the discs by gently applying the pads.
