UK drivers confused by tyre labels, eBay research finds

New eBay research shows UK drivers are confused by EU tyre labels, with many missing out on safer and more efficient tyre choices.

Nearly half of UK motorists admit they don’t understand tyre safety labels, according to new research from eBay. Despite being in use since 2012, many drivers are still unaware that the labels provide key information on safety, fuel efficiency and performance in different conditions.

Two thirds of those surveyed couldn’t correctly identify the meaning of the symbols, and three quarters admitted they tend to leave tyre choice to garages rather than doing their own research. With more than two million MoT test failures last year linked to tyre defects, the figures underline the risks of a lack of tyre safety knowledge.

The study also found older drivers are least likely to research tyre purchases, with more than a third of over-65s saying they do no homework before buying. The result is that many UK motorists are missing out on potentially safer and cheaper choices when it comes to tyres.

Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations, Parts and Accessories at eBay, said: ‘Despite existing in the UK for more than a decade, knowledge around EU tyre labels among UK motorists is still sparse. It is worrying that proper knowledge could make maintaining vital vehicle parts safer and cheaper. Using eBay’s tyre fitment service, customers can see EU tyre labels clearly indicated in listings before deciding on a purchase, helping to identify exactly what they need and safely preparing them for any season.’

What this means for you

If you don’t know what your tyres are rated for, you could be missing out on safety and efficiency benefits. A tyre with a higher wet grip rating, for example, can reduce stopping distances in the rain and potentially prevent accidents.

Checking tyre noise and efficiency ratings can also save money in the long run, as quieter, more efficient tyres make motorway driving more comfortable and cut fuel costs. Choosing the right rubber is just as important as servicing your brakes or checking your oil.

Relying solely on garages to choose tyres might feel easier, but it leaves you less informed about whether you’re getting the right product at the right price. Spending a few minutes learning the labels can help you buy smarter.

Editor’s view: A little knowledge is a lot of power

Tyres are one of those car parts we all take for granted, but the wrong choice can cost you dearly. If you’ve ever aquaplaned on a motorway or felt your car struggle to grip on ice, you’ll know why those little labels matter.

The truth is, we should all be more tyre-literate. They’re not just black circles of rubber, they’re your car’s only contact with the road. And with millions of MoT failures every year linked to poor tyres, getting it right is vital.

I like that eBay is making the label information clearer in its listings. Anything that helps drivers make safer, better-value choices is a win in my book. It’s another reminder that a well-priced product backed by proper information is what we should all be demanding from the motoring industry.
