This is Volkswagen's first purpose built pick-up truck and it will be in the UK by September.
The Amarok will initially be available as a double-cab, but single-cab versions will follow and with a 2.0-litre diesel engine - smaller than most vehicles of this type - it is likely to offer best-in-class fuel consumption.
The Amarok has a payload capacity of 1150kg and a maximum towing limit of 2.8 tonnes. Volkswagen claims best-in-class cargo area dimensions at 1555mm long and 1620mm wide with a width between the wheel arches of 1222mm.
Volkswagen says it is the first time on a medium-sized pick-up truck that Euro-pallets can be loaded sideways, saving space.
With a ladder chassis the Amarok is available either with rearwheel drive, switchable four-wheel drive or permanent four wheel drive. A rear differential lock is also available.
The Amarok comes with Hill Descent Assist to control its behaviour on steep off-road downhill tracks, while there is also Hill Hold Assist to help prevent the vehicle rolling back during hill starts.
Customers can choose either a 122bhp 2.0 TDI producing 251lb-ft of torque, or a 163bhp version developing 295lb-ft.
Both engines have a six-speed manual gearbox and promise CO2 emissions of less than 200g/km which should allow fuel consumption close to 40mpg.
The range is expected to comprise a standard model for customers who need a pick-up that is as robust and practical as possible, to offering all the latest luxury items expected for those using Amarok as a leisure vehicle.
An extensive accessories programme will also be offered for the Amarok - from a styling bar and running boards, through a cargo cover and Multi-Connect load securing system to a selection of stylish alloy wheels.
