Fiesta merits a three-star Euro NCAP rating – but only just. It’s here that the underlying 13-year-old design from the Fiesta Mk 3 shows up. Crumple zones are improved, but passenger and side airbags are only optional – a serious omission on this age of car. Very secure though, especially in this class. Strong locks, immobiliser and alarm / double locks on top-spec models.

The boot is too small for a family weekend away without some cunning packing, but big enough for day to day use. Not a great deal of imagination went into providing cubby holes or storage space for nick-nacks, but parking in town is easy: Fiesta is only small, it has a tight turning circle and most upmarket models come with power steering, too.
