Ford S-MAX (15 on) - rated 4.4 out of 5

The first of Ford’s cars to use its Kinetic Styling, the S-Max borrowed much of the contemporary Mondeo’s mechanicals, just like the slightly larger Galaxy, and as such drove just as well as it looked. Seven seats were standard, and though the rear were best suited for children even adults could get relatively comfortable back there – especially on shorter distances.

If you needed to transport six passengers in space and style, you could do a lot worse than the Ford S-Max, a car the firm termed an Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than traditional MPV.

Not only did it look good, but it drove excellently as well which is why, when introduced in 2006, it was voted European Car of the Year.
