Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 44 - 88 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

For best Kia Rio running costs go for the 1.1-litre diesel EcoDynamics ‘1’ version that promises an impressive 88.3mpg. Next up is the 1.1 CRDi 1 Air that returns an official 78.5mpg. If petrol is your thing you’re best off with the 1.25-litre engine and that’ll return a claiimed 56.5mpg. The 1.4-litre petrol version isn’t bad for for fuel economy either and that promises an average of 51.4mpg, while the 1.4-litre diesel with EcoDynamics will return an official combined fuel consumption of 70.6mpg.

Servicing is usually competitive at Kia dealers – the Korean maker’s parts costs are more in line with the likes of Ford and Vauxhall than BMW and Mercedes. There should be no massive bills to worry about for the early stages of the Rio’s life and the comprehensive warranty will help keep running costs down.

Again, the EcoDynamics models are best for Kia Rio emissions. The 1.1 diesel emits 85g/km of CO2 while the 1.4-litre petrol engine emits 128g/km of CO2, which isn’t bad but equally not the most competitive in class. The 1.4-litre diesel emits 105g/km of CO2 while the best petrol model for CO2 emissions is the 1.25 that emits 114g/km.

Kia Rio reliability is not in question because the manufacturer has a reputation for building solid cars, and the seven-year warranty that comes as standard will help reassure any new owner. It also demonstrates how much faith Kia has in its own products.
