Unfortunately, Euro NCAP never put Sportage to the test, so safety ratings are not available. However, the body seems relatively sturdy and should fair well in moderate collisions. The clever immobiliser cutout after two minutes should act effectively against theft, though an additional alarm may be needed, as there is no remote central locking. This would also keep the insurers happier, too.

Sportage’s luggage capacity is moderate, while the cabin lacks storage opportunities, which may be a problem for buyers with children. The shallow boot prohibits the stowage of little more than a holiday suitcase or a few bags of shopping, and although the rear seats can be folded down for added space, this is of no use if all rear seats are being occupied.

Despite its compact shape, car parking is made difficult by the loose steering, though Sportage could prove useful on rougher terrain.
