Mazda 6 Saloon boot space, practicality and safety

2007 - 2009 (change model)
Practicality rating: 3.5 out of 53.5

Written by David Ross Published: 6 June 2019 Updated: 6 June 2019

The Mazda6 was one of the first models to undergo Euro NCAPs more stringent crash tests in 2009. The new overall rating covers not only adult occupant safety but includes child and pedestrian safety along with a rear impact whiplash test. It scored the maximum five star rating and all models come with traction control plus dual front, side and curtain airbags.

Daytime running lights are also standard, which helps you to be seen in murkier weather. On the security front, all cars have a Thatcham category one alarm and immobiliser system, while the top model gets keyless entry and start – allowing you to gain access to the car without taking the key out of your pocket or bag. New from 2009 is an optional blind spot safety system.

When the car is travelling at more than 37mph, microwave emitters in the rear bumper detect when vehicles (including motorcycles) are approaching the rear-view blindspot area and a warning light flashes in the windscreen pillar. If the driver indicates to pull out when the vehicle is in range, a warning beep is sounded.

The saloon bodystyle isn’t as practical as the hatchback and estate versions – especially for family buyers. That said, as saloons go, the 6 is a pretty good one, with a wide boot opening and space for two or three very large suitcases (a total of 519 litres – slightly more than the hatch). Inside the large glovebox is big enough for the hefty owners’ manual and much more besides.

However, unlike some of its more upmarket rivals, it’s not lined, which means smaller items (coins CDs etc), can rattle when the car is on the move. The cabin also has concealed twin cupholders and a large central storage box that doubles as an armrest.
