The estate hasn’t been crash tested separately by Euro NCAP but it should perform similarly to the five-star C-Class saloon. The body shell is stronger than the previous estate, so occupants are better protected in the event of a collision. All models have seven airbags on board (twin front, side and curtain airbags plus a driver’s kneebag). Other safety features include the standard ‘Pre-Safe’ system – which prepares the car and passengers if it detects an accident is imminent – and optional intelligent lights which adapt to different driving conditions.

The C-Class takes good care of passengers and their possessions. Both the rear armrest and centre console feature discreet storage for smaller items, such as keys, coins and mobile phones while hidey holes are lined with non-slip rubber to prevent valuables from rattling around. The glovebox is amply sized and there are numerous 12V power sockets dotted around the cabin.

The rear tailgate is electrically powered and opens and closes using either the key fob, a button on the driver’s door or another above the number plate. The impressive 485-litre luggage capacity is bigger than its main alternatives plus four anchoring rings and two clever pop-out hooks secure goods on the way home.
